Kenwal Pickling

Orgins of pickling can be related back to the early ages of metallurgy with various techniques to reduce impurities in iron and eventually steel production. The process of pickling itself - wherein scale (iron oxide crystals) is removed from hot-rolled steel prior to cold forming - would not develop for thousands of years but can be broadly divided into two eras of manual and chemical applications.

The Kenwal Pickling Process
1. Steel Coils are delivered by truck or rail via an onsite rail line and warehoused in an indoor coil storage area (50,000 ton capacity) where they are inspected and inventoried.
2. Coils are then transferred to an off-line prep station to be cropped and gauged to specific customer requirements: A process that expedites overall pickling line production.
3. Pickling begins at the entry line where steel is uncoiled. An anti-coil break device minimizes coil defects throughout all stages of the line processing. Tension leveling may also be applied.
4. Flattened steel coils are then run through a series of heated and turbulent HCL acid baths of various concentration.
5. Steel coils then pass through a stain-free rinse section and are dried and X-ray gauged
6. Oils are electrostatically applied to the coil.
